We are overjoyed to announce the first recipients of the HERO 320 scholarship award! Choosing is not always an easy thing to do, but our two recipients made the task easier for the HERO 320 Board. The selection process revolved around the words of our hero, Retired Fire Captain DJ Lopez, who often began a class by saying “If you are here for a paycheck, you are here for the wrong reason. I can teach you everything I know, but I cannot teach you compassion. That has to come from your heart.” We believe the candidates chosen to receive this award embody that sense of compassion and service to others.
Please join us in congratulating our future heroes and wishing them much luck and success in their studies. May they be inspired by DJ’s story and inspire those around them.
Diego Ruiz is a high school senior graduating from Boulder Creek High School in Anthem, Arizona. Diego is someone that takes his academic studies seriously and is a member of the National Honor Society. But above and beyond his studies, Diego has displayed compassion and a sense of duty to his community by spending his time feeding the homeless and attending the Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical Citizens Academy where his high level of determination and professionalism left an impression on his instructors.
Diego’s goals include becoming a firefighter paramedic with an agency, possibly Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical. Like our hero, Diego has a special interest in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and especially Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Growing up, Diego witnessed the effects of a serious heart condition on a child and their family when a young family member was treated at a local children’s hospital. The work of the doctors and nurses left a lasting impression that has influenced Diego’s decision to pursue a career in emergency medical services. We have no doubt Diego will achieve his goals and serve his community with dedication and compassion.
Logan Luedeman is currently pursuing his EMT certification through Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona. In addition to his course work, Logan has been working with the Prescott Fire Department where his work ethic and integrity are highly regarded. He sets high standards for himself which raises up those around him. Whether it was being chosen by his peers as a camp leader at Journey Opportunities for Leaders of Tomorrow camp or cleaning up the grounds after Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo, Logan has displayed a knack for leadership and service.
Growing up with a firefighter dad, Logan knows first hand the challenges of a career in emergency medical services and the sacrifices that are needed to do the job well. But like our hero, Logan has also witnessed the rewards that come from service to the community. Logan looks forward to completing his education at Yavapai College and pursuing a career with the Prescott Fire Department. The example set forth by his dad and fellow firefighters has inspired him and we are positive Logan will lead and inspire those that follow.
